Jul. 10th, 2007 12:04 pmI'm a pain in the ass reader. I have incredibly, disgustingly, annoyingly specific requirements for stories. I won't read drabbles or ficlets, period. OTP or not, I demand a good long read. Yes, I am the EPIC STORY girl. I want a mature rating. I want the stuff that you can't show on TV, moist bits and thrusting and I won't kick you out of bed for bringing the angst. Since I am such a picky little bitch, I tend to re-read stories. A lot. A seriously lot.
Here's the list of stories I've read more than twice. They're all long. They're all adult. They're all (in my opinion) wonderful.
"Most Favored" by
mithril_56 - What don't I lurrve about this story? It's Spangel with extras, an incredibly detailed and complicated plot that shows both talent and a wonderful imagination. I heart this story, particularly the plotty bits.
"Reassembling" by
texanfan-Spandery lusciousness here. Buffy and Anya are gone, Xander is hella mature and Spike stays just this side of evil. It's the perfect tale when you just want some love.
"Unbreakable" by
fanbot-Is there angst? Hoo baby, there's some super angst here with a smooth side of lurrve that just makes you wanna beg for more. Kidnapped Xander with a wiser and sadder Spike to stand by him...this one will have you reaching for a hankie AND a cigarette.
"Changes 1 & 2" by
tabaqui- Okay, now of all my re-readables this is probably my favorite. I downloaded this to the laptop so I could read it over vacation. That's how much I adore this story. Xander in incredibly thoughtful in this story, and the OC's are so damn good, you'd swear the author majored in OC's in college (which, hey! She may have.) Also, this plot? Whew, baby! It has twists, it has turns, it has heft. Definitely a major talent here.
"Grief Counseling" by
amejisuto &
suki_blue-Okay, seriously, has anyone NOT read this story? Incredible plot with surprise twist that I never saw coming, characters that sound real, and the lurrve balances the angst so nicely I think they used a scale. This is not only a re-read but a print out and carry with you. Spike and Xander moving on, what could be better?
"The Naughty Ward" by
virtualpersonal-I don't like Human AU. Ever. I like my vamps to stay vamped. But, Regency Spander? Who could resist? This story defines the word "rollicking" and it definitely hit all my buttons. Wow-the fic equivalent of a planetary alignment...it's that good.
"Repossession" by Lazuli Kat-I'm sure this author has a livejournal, but my memory went blank. This is the legend. It defines the EPIC. You will literally spend days reading this story and still be sorry when it's over. Damaged Spike and loving Xander, with a heaping helping of terrific OC's and a plot so complex you need to re-read it just to finally get it (okay, maybe that's just me). Angel makes an appearance and it will blow you away. Love is too tame a word for my feelings on this fic.
Okay, that's not a complete list. I have a ton of other fics I've re-read multiple times by equally fabulous authors. I'm sure I'll do this again, just because I can't not share. A big hug and smooch to the above authors for writing such wonderful stories!

on 2007-07-11 08:54 pm (UTC)Seriously, I'm so damn picky that I hardly ever find new stories to read. It's my own fault...but it doesn't mean I don't get all sniffly :P

on 2007-07-12 02:40 am (UTC)Boy, can I relate! I write, for the most part, so I can have exactly what I want to read :> Sooo... I too re-read my favorite works over and over again. I will read short works by good authors, but always wish they were longer and usually end up somewhat to very dissatisfied. I can't write a short story to save my life. I only really like one pairing a lot (hello, Spangel!), and can only tolerate a few others, and only under pretty specific conditions (i.e. as secondary to Spangel - hehehe). And unfortunately for me writing skill has no impact on that one, though I'll probably read girlpire's boat story because it's a comedy, and as long as it's satirical, that's okay for me and my stubborn spangel-mania. I just like what I like - woe is me. I can seriously only think of one exception to my 'strict' set of preferences, and that is Kat and her Bent Justice epic. I'm always just a bit sad that those guys aren't really the Angel and Spike I know and love, but the story is so good, and the characters close enough to the originals that I just can't help but like it. It sort of amazes me, to tell you the truth.
Anyway, I definitely get where you're coming from. And again, thanks for the pimp!
