I don't read Star Trek fanfic but doesn't this bit of Star Trek novel summary...
Kirk soon becomes involved in the complex drama of Spock's family...
...sound exactly like what you'd expect? I imagine dozens of TOS fanfic K/S have that EXACT LINE as part of their summaries.

I've read that novel so many times, you have no idea. It's actually a pretty good murder mystery. I heartily recommend it.
